Organized Activities

The following activities are open to CSFW-15 attendees and accompanying persons.

Croquet Tournament

The traditional CSFW croquet tournament will be held on the lawn of the Keltic Lodge. It will be coordinated by Paul Syverson (Croquet Chair).

Whale-Watching Excursion

A whale-watching excursion will be organized with Seaquarium, a local operator about 10 minutes away from the Keltic Lodge. Arrangements will be finalized in May: the cost, Canadian dollars, will be around $20-25 a person (depending on our budget situation, we may be able to subsidize it).

Seaquarium runs trips at 10am, 1:30pm and 4:30pm if there are at least 6 passengers. In particular during the week, it may be a good idea to call them (902-285-2103 or 902-285-2401) to make sure that the trip is actually going (i.e. that they have enough passengers). We are likely to arrange a special trip after the last session on Monday or Tuesday. Details in May/June.

Sea Kayaking Tour

Like last year, I will help arrange sea kayaking excursions with Cape Breton Coast Adventure, an operator located about 10 minutes away from the Keltic Lodge.

Cape Breton Coast Adventure runs tours at 9am and 2pm. Tours last between 3 and 3 and 1/2 hours. Group size should be at least 3 and at most 8.

Other Activities

Within the premises

Without leaving the grounds of the Keltic Lodge, guests can enjoy:

Around the premises

The Keltic Lodge is within the boundaries of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which offers great hiking and backpacking opportunities. Moose, bears, lynx and more seldom cougars can occasionally be seen. Click here for a complete descriptions of the activities available in the park.

Picturesque fishing villages along the scenic Cabot Trail offer opportunities to get acquainted with the local lifestyle.

Here is an incomplete summary of the possibilities that a visitor can enjoy within a few miles of the Keltic Lodge:

In Cape Breton Island

The Cabot Trail circles the Highland section of Cape Breton. At its southern tip lies the town of Baddeck, which, among other things, hosts the final home of Alexander Graham Bell. On the other side of the Bras d'Or Lake, a large body of water that occupies the central section of Cape Breton Island, noteworthy sights are the Fortress of Louisbourg and the station from which Guglielmo Marconi transmitted the first recorded east-bound radio signal across the Atlantic.

Cape Breton is famous for its music. It is also home of several French-speaking Acadian communities, from which the Cajun people of South-Western Louisiana descend.
