To: Neumann@CSL.SRI.COM Subject: SRI Celebration of Drew Dean's Life, Saturday 19 November 2022 This is an invitation to register for either in-person or zoom attendance. Please feel free to share this message with others whom you know were close to Drew. I'm BCC:ing everyone on this mailing, so when you forward this message to others, it won't go to everyone else on this list. Apologies already for duplications, particularly with the SRI-CSL and cryptographers' lunch lists (which have some overlap). The registration form is here, thanks to Jenny McNeill: https://forms.gle/vMnhhgMyQ1zwoCT8A This is an open event. At present, we do not expect to have to limit personal attendance unless there are masking and distancing rules in effect in the case of a COVID resurgence. The room is fairly spacious, but we might hit the legal occupancy limit modulo any forthcoming pandemic constraints. Some of us may opt to wear masks while mingling. We also do not expect to limit the Zoomers, unless the number exceeds our rather large Zoom capacity. Thus, registration is important, and could conceivably close before the week ending on 19 November -- although it seems unlikely now. PLEASE REGISTER, indicating whether you will be remote via Zoom *or* present in person, in which case please specify any food preferences. There is no cost involved. We will not be sharing any personal information. If you have any other concerns, please share them with me directly: Neumann@CSL.SRI.COM . Some of you have already indicated you will be here in person. You should also register, so that we have an exact count for seating and food, and for badges (we expect Drew's sisters and brothers-in-law will wish to meet many of you in person), and for remote participants, to get a rough zoom count to make sure we are not exceeding the maximum. The URL for the Zooomers will be distributed to the registrants earlier that week. Laptops will not be needed if you are present, to minimize audio feedback and internal network overload. BACKGROUND ITEMS: A Chronological Timeline of Drew's professional life: http://www.csl.sri.com/neumann/Drew-timeline.pdf Drew's Kudoboard (in progress), to which we hope you will contribute: https://www.kudoboard.com/boards/7EwhehOU The published obituary: https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/san-diego-ca/richard-dean-10922443 SUMMARY OF THE PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE for SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER 2022: The current agenda involves TWO PARTS, with breaks as needed. Both parts are hybrid -- in-person and via zoom -- and sequential, to be recorded and subsequently available online. The physical presence will be in the Innovation Center at SRI International, 333 Ravenswood Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025-3493, which is outside the normal security perimeter. PREAMBLE: The SRI Innovation Center will be open at least by 11:00am PST for lunch (and somewhat earlier for preparations, potentially with small rooms for quiet discussions if desired, particularly for Drew's sisters, Carolyn and Julie. PART ONE: Drew's Roles in Technology, starting roughly at 11:30am PST Special Saturday Cryptographers Lunch (originally dating back to Marty Hellman at Stanford, brief period at XEROXPARC, and then at SRI). This meeting is intended to be a high-level technically oriented discussion that is generally understandable by all participants. No deep mathematics required. Pat Lincoln will be providing the lunch. [Parenthesized times are currently suggested maximums, but are likely to be adjusted.] * PGN Brief intro (8 min?) including the chronology chart (noted among the BACKGROUND items, with one-sheet hardcopy for those present with the initial agenda for Part One, and the URL for the kudoboard in progress: https://www.kudoboard.com/boards/7EwhehOU. Remote viewers will benefit from the BACKGROUND URLs above.. * Ed Felten (8 min) and Dan Wallach (20 min) The Princeton years * Teresa Lunt and Dirk Balfanz (8 min) The XEROX-PARC years * Patrick Lincoln (8 min) SRI International * Natarajan Shankar (8 min) The previrtualization paper and its impact * Kathleen Fisher (20 min) Drew's DARPA PROCEED and SAFER programs * Zoran Popovic (20 min) Drew's DARPA Crowd-Sourced Formal Verification prog. * Jared C. Davis (8 minutes) AMAZON * Drew's siblings and Other Personal Comments: Drew's sisters (Carolyn and Julie) and their spouses (Toby and Paul, respectively) are planning on attending in person for the entire time. Drew's parents will attend remotely, and will certainly be invited to speak. No agenda is set yet for others. (I think some remote folks may decide to wander off after they speak, so we hope to start Part Two before a longish break.) PART TWO * Ad-hoc contributions (before and after the main break) Depending on how things progress in Part One, there will be a schmooze-break at some point. We plan to include comments from Julie and Carolyn BEFORE the break, returning for comments from everyone else who might wish to speak -- including some who wish to augment their further comments. This may be a real-time decision. PLEASE Remember, this is a plan in progress, subject to refinement. Peter [FYI: There are expectations that Drew's funeral (on 17 November 2022 in La Jolla at 10:30am PST, as noted above in the obituary) may be available on zoom from Dan Wallach's cell phone, although the Church is not allowing any recording. https://riceuniversity.zoom.us/j/94725998501?pwd=N3lUc01MdUJQL3pyR0pCU1pGWEVqZz09 ]
