Getting There and Away
Like most past editions, CSFW-14 takes place in a relatively remote location.
This page lists the most likely ways to get there and away. A more complete
list of alternatives can be found at the Nova Scotia Tourism
bureau.
Halifax International Airport
Most travelers will arrive in Nova Scotia by flying into Halifax International Airport (YHZ). This
airport has direct flights from the US (Boston and Newark), Europe (London,
Germany and Iceland), and Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary,
Vancouver, ...).
Halifax International Airport is about 355 Km (220 miles) from the Keltic Lodge. This
distance can be covered in several ways:
- Rent a car and drive. It takes 4 to 5 hours along a magnificent drive to
get there. Directions can be found at the Keltic Lodge's location
page. People getting in after a long and tiring flight may consider
spending a night in the Halifax area before heading toward Cape Breton.
- Share
a ride with somebody who is renting a car.
- Fly to Sydney Airport.
- Use public transportation.
Those who prefer spending their time in planes and airport lounges may
consider flying into Sydney, Nova Scotia
(YQY), the closest domestic airport - not Australia. YQY has limited
service to and from a few airports on the Atlantic coast of Canada, mostly
Halifax (it is not yet a gateway to Europe and the World, as claimed on their
web page).
Sydney Regional Airport is about 145 Km (90 miles) from the Keltic Lodge. This
distance can be covered in several ways:
- Rent a car and drive. It takes about an hour and half to get there.
Directions can be found at the Keltic Lodge's location
page. People getting in after a long and tiring flight may consider
spending a night in Sydney before heading toward Cape Breton.
- Share
a ride with somebody who is renting a car.
- Use public transportation.
My two cents: For most people, it does not make sense to fly into
Sydney: the internal flight will add to the cost of your ticket, it will not
save you time, and you will still be at an inconvenient distance from the
workshop venue. If fatigue is an issue, I recommend spending a night in
Halifax before going to Cape Breton.
The Keltic Lodge can be reached by public transportation from both YHZ and
YQY. Note that this is an inconvenient and relatively expensive option.

Arriving to Nova Scotia by Car
In particular if you are attending LICS'01 in Boston,
MA after CSFW-14, you may be considering bringing a car into Nova Scotia.
There are ferrys to/from Portland, ME and Bar Harbor, ME from/to Yarmouth, Nova
Scotia (about 8 hours from the Keltic Lodge).
Nova Scotia can also be reached by land from
continental Northern America.
